Crushing the Box

Breaking the chains of 9 to 5 and obtaining total freedom – a new approach to entrepreneurism.

What’s the Box? January 2, 2008

The Box represents my current, prototypical life: working a 9 to 5 job, living for weekends, and marginally existing for the occasional vacation.  The goal isn’t just to get outside of the Box, but rather to crush it completely.  Once I’m out, I don’t want to be able to get back in…ever.

Here’s the story:

I graduated from college in 2003 and 2005 (two Bachelor’s degrees) with my eyes bent on who knows what.  Working at State Farm for 8 months gave me enough distaste for corporate life to last me forever.  My current job, in web design, looked on the surface to be better – it’s not.

My whole life, I’ve been an unconventional thinker.  I’ve never accepted social norms without some degree of question, and I’ve never allowed myself to fall in line with what is “normal”.  Now, working a “normal” 9-5 job, I’m disgusted and ready to get out.  I’ve always had a dream of being an entrepreneur, and always had the spirit.  Now, I’m doing something about it.

I don’t expect anyone to actually read this blog.  That’s fine by me.  Moreso, this is just a journal for myself, an accountability measure of sorts, that will allow me to document this journey from employed to employer, and finally to total freedom to design my lifestyle as I please.

The ultimate goal: to work for myself, but in a capacity that doesn’t require unending hours and stress.  The goal is to create a company that require little of my presence, allowing me to chase and fulfill dreams, give back to the community and learn in ways and places like I never have.  It’s possible, I just have to do it.
